Slightly late to the party, we recently discovered Sun-San sandals, the water resistant leather sandals that have been a cult classic in America since 1940. They reached UK shores last summer and are quite frankly the coolest sandals we’ve seen. They look like classic leather sandals, but there’s a twist: the leather is coated with a water resistant sealant, the metal tongue buckles are rust-proof, the souls are a bouncy urethane bonded base and they mould to the user’s feet with repeated wear. They are great for running in and out of the ocean and can even be popped into the washing machine.

There’s also a nice little story behind the brand: As a way to cope with leather shortages in World War II, Walter Hoy started making his sandals using the scrap leather left over from making military boots. Word soon spread and before long, families from all over St. Louis, were asking if Walter could make sandals for their kids.

We featured them in our Six of the best sandals and think they’re a fantastic alternative to plastic sandals.
