There’s nothing better than seeing a group of young kids in full-face helmets bigger than their bikes pumping round a BMX track on a Sunday morning. And now that BMX is being taken seriously as a sport by the powers that be (BMX at the Olympics, whatever next!), government funding is flowing in, with five new tracks being built in east London.

Every Sunday at Haggerston BMX track in Hackney there are coaching sessions for ages 4 upwards. And you don’t have to have a bike to take park, Hackney BMX club have club bikes for loan. The sessions which start at 10am cost £3, with the first session free. This Sunday there are Time Trials and the club will be choosing six athletes to represent Hackney BMX in the Youth Games next month. Don’t miss out… Check the facebook page for details www.facebook.com/HackneyBMX

ELBO Cycling Club also run kids BMX coaching sessions at Haggerston track and other locations around London, including Greenwich and Walthamstow, and are in the process of building a track at Mile End. This Sunday between 1pm and 3pm they are running an open session at Haggerston track where kids can try out for the Waltham Forest BMX team. Check out their facebook page for more details www.facebook.com/ELBOCC

We’ll be heading down there to take some snaps and find out more about the five new BMX tracks around the capital. Stay tuned.
